The Invasion
The Horses from Snowy River
A cinematic feature documentary exploring the feral horse plague in Mount Kosciusko. Since the bushfires nearly 20,000 brumbies now roam the Snowy Mountains, despite culling efforts that legalised ground shooting, drone strikes and led to threats of a firebomb.
Now, they are heading West and fast, together with wild dear and pigs, with devastating impacts on Australia’s landscape and native wildlife.
According to science-based research and leaders of the Invasive Species Council, if the number of these animals are not brought under control by 2027, they will devastate Australia’s natural landscape before climate change will. Yet, their hands are tied, as they work with the National Parks and Wildlife teams to bring these numbers under control via the polarising, yet humane culling operations. The reality is, popular opinion, understandably, does not like the idea of killing the majestic horse. However, sadly, few brumbies are thriving, with many of these animals frequently suffering in the wild, diseased and starving.
From the conservationists, parks and wildlife officers and invasive species experts on the front line, to trigger happy hunters and the unlikely progressive Liberal Environment Minister pulling the strings, this documentary will explore all sides of this complex environmental, social and moral debate, with a cinematic approach. Beautiful visualisation of the landscape and animals tempered with score and sound design, timed with a thriller’s narrative.
This story will be a crucial addition to the essential canon of climate change films the world needs to see right now.
This film will confront the heartbreaking consequences of what we must do when an animal we love invades a land we love.
