Frankie Parrino never wanted the Australian country life she was born into. But when her father and brother are killed in a fire, Frankie leaves her urbane Italian life in Naples to save the family restaurant business, La Sorella, from mafia middlemen getting too big for their boots. Reuniting with her mother and grandmother, Frankie quickly learns there are mysterious histories at play in the town, and the mafia is entwined in her family’s life more than believed. She must decide whether she should return to Italy or stay and risk having her own secrets revealed. But the longer she stays, the clearer she sees that the women of her family may very well have the power to take the small-town mafiosos down: not through strong-arm tactics, or Soprano-esque negotiations, but by embracing a centuries-old Italian superstition -- il malocchio (the evil eye).
